the lessons i learn at work.

I see him coming every morning.

I watch as he walks down the side walk and waits for the traffic to change so he can cross. The traffic changes and he crosses in his duck like awkward strut across the street. He waits again. The light changes and again he crosses.

Every morning he stumbles up the steps and walks clumbsily across the room to where I stand.

Every morning. If it weren't so I would worry.

He is one of our 'regulars.' His name is Bill.

There are many things predictable about Bill. Like; he always orders a Large. Yes, he does want whipped cream on that, and Bill is always "great!" Our conversations don't consist of much although they happen frequently. The usual, "How are you today Bill?" followed by, "Have a great day, come back tomorrow!" Are pretty much the norm.

Sometimes Bill comes alone, and on those days he's always a bit more awkward, a bit more clumbsy, and a little more uneasy. Most days he's with his Dad, or his Grandfather, and sometimes a nice lady who occasionally will order something as well. He's lucky on the days when its his Dad...cause he always pays, to which Bill always replies, "Thanks Dad!" In his always energetic and friendly manner.

I look forward to those 5 minutes when Bill is in the store. His energetic, always happy no matter the situation, genuine smile are what keep me in check for the rest of the day. When Bill walks in the door each morning something else comes in with him which I'm sure he is unaware of. Bill brings with him this convicting spirit that attacks me every time and tells me of how ungrateful I am to the God who made me, it reminds me to be thankful for this day, for my hands, arms, feet and eyes. Especially for my eyes. And, as Bill walks away and says (as he says most every day),"See you tomorrow!" I stand there perplexed, and in awe and wonder.

Perplexed because Bill is blind.

In awe because Bill knows whats important in life.

And I wonder, what would the world be like if everyone was blind? Or, what would the world be like if there were more people like Bill?

Amazing blog Katy! I think there are Bill's in all of our lives. There's that kid at church-Kyle-that's blind. He's always smiling! I can't imagine what that would be like, but I just thank God for the blessings he bestows on Kyle's life-and I try to give God glory with all the things He has given me. Praise the Lord for Bill and Kyle!
